Thumvar grew up as part of the extended Gritmog family of gargoyles that lived in "The Reach" which is a sideways Thassilonian ruin forming a cliff face in the Red Mountains. The clan has an unusually good relationship with the Hethgon's Hold mining community after they were united against the raiding Noland barbarians by Hethgon, a bard clergyman of Cayden Cailean. They act as muscle and scouts for a bit of coin and lots of food and drink. Thumvar learned a smattering of Tien (especially the swear words) from the son of the smith in Hethgon, who was from Tien Xia. He fought against the raiders starting in his mid teens and quickly grew into a skilled warrior. He joined a mercenary outfit for a three year hitch and made sergant. The smith's family pointed him towards the Rusty Dragon and Ameiko to as a good place to find work after he departed the mercenary band. She introduced him to Sandru. He now works for Sandru and is in favor of going to the longer, and hopefully more profitable, trade routes.
